■ With a Good Soul beneath the Jacaranda Tunnel

▪︎Poem by Yoo Ho-Geun (YeJong)

On the road through Pretoria,

the jacarandas reach up to kiss the sky,

and fallen petals along the roadside

gather softly, like snow that remembers light.

When I drive beneath them,

the old trees arch to form a violet tunnel,

where time itself slows its breathing.

Light brushes against my fingertips,

and the wind slips through petals, whispering:

“Good souls

arrive like light through these blossoms.”

Sunbeams pass through the flowers,

painting my hands and face in trembling violet.

The touch of earth and petals underfoot

wraps my heart in quiet tenderness.

The songs of birds, the hum of engines afar—

they mingle and become whole,

alive only when shared with that one good person.

Even walking, even driving,

amid the dust of the city,

nothing shines longer than

the smile of that soul

and the memory of passing together

beneath this purple tunnel of grace.

On rainy days,

when cold drops touch my skin,

their memory spreads

like warm mist across my heart,

soft and endless.

In a small café filled with coffee’s breath,

a wooden table trembles with ripples in the cup—

and when our fingertips met,

my heart swayed with the wind.

In life, such people are rare as stars,

yet to hold that star and walk together—

that is the quiet wealth of existence.

Here, beneath the falling jacaranda blossoms,

the wind, the soil, the sunlight, and the rain of Africa

bear witness to our steps and our hearts.

That bond—

as precious as each petal,

as eternal as the light and wind

engraved within this tunnel—

lives on, breathing gently, forever.
